Chance, Evolution or Creation

Derwent Water

About eighteen months ago, returning from holiday (what are those?!), we stopped at Derwentwater and strolled along a wooded footpath which eventually led us to Friar's Crag and the John Ruskin memorial stone. In those beautiful surroundings, with the shrill song of birds all around us, I was particularly struck by the words on the memorial:

THE SPIRIT OF GOD
IS AROUND YOU IN THE
AIR THAT YOU BREATHE
+HIS GLORY IN THE
LIGHT THAT YOU SEE
AND IN THE FRUITFUL-
NESS OF THE EARTH AND
THE JOY OF ITS CREATURES
HE HAS WRITTEN FOR YOU
DAY BY DAY HIS REVELATION
AS HE HAS GRANTED YOU
DAY BY DAY YOUR DAILY
BREAD

Looking around at the beauty and complexity of nature, it is impossible to believe that life on Earth emerged from multiple millions of lucky chances. In fact one of the results of the tragic Covid 19 pandemic, and the heroic efforts of scientists to understand it, has been that the virus acts in a way that is predictable, following preordained ‘laws of nature’, even the ‘mutations’, so that scientists have been able to model the progress of the virus and develop vaccines to counteract it.

Watching the video ‘Chance, Evolution or Creation’ by Jordan Walton makes what could be a dry, academic subject really interesting, engaging and thought provoking. It takes some things we already know a bit about, such as DNA and the Water Cycle and extends our understanding as well as introducing us to The Ingenious Rat – who will really blow your mind!

The video lasts just 28 minutes but it could totally change the way you look at life. Enjoy.

Dealing with depression

Do you suffer from depression or know someone who does? Do you ever feel like no one really understands how it feels? or that you don't understand a loved one who is suffering? Well I suffer too and I used to feel a lot like that, that no one could possibly know or understand how truly terrible I felt. However, having taken part in the making of these videos I've come to realise that many, many people as well as myself do suffer with depression. If one of those people is you then why not watch these videos, it's really a summary of my wife's and my experiences during my ongoing battle with depression, one suffering and one trying to support. The things that helped us both ... and the things that didn't, general tips on how to support people suffering with this horrible illness and how my faith hit rock bottom and how by his grace GOD brought me back from the brink.

It may be that the specific circumstances that we talk about e.g faith and things within our Ecclesia don't apply to you personally, but all of the general principles of social interaction and the feeling of depression will be instantly recognisable to those of you that suffer and I hope if nothing else you will take comfort from the fact that you are not alone and that the very fact that you are reading these paragraphs may even be the beginning of the journey to getting back on top of depression.

What is the world coming to?

I imagine most of us have asked ourselves that question in the last few months with recent world events. Covid19 has made people question a lot of things. Why is this happening? What can I do about it? Who should we trust?

As Christadelphians we believe that God has a plan and purpose for this world and all the people in it. This presentation explores the wonder of our planet and our responsibility to it. It discusses the great and not so great things that mankind has achieved. And finally, it shares the hope for better times ahead when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to the Earth.

This talk was recorded in February 2020, just a month before lockdown began in the UK and yet coronavirus gets only a very small mention. At this point I think a lot of people still saw it as something that was happening in other countries, but it wouldn't affect us. How wrong we were and how quickly things change! The Bible tells us that before the return of Jesus there will be wars, earthquakes, famine and disease and this paints a very accurate picture of the world we live in now.

If you are wondering what the world is coming to, then look to the Bible and hear its message. God’s Kingdom will soon be here, and he wants us all to be a part of it.
